Scotland call-up for Madras pair Mungo and Harry

The duo, team mates at Madras Rugby Club, were recently picked to be part of the Scotland under 16 squad for next week’s 2017 Colwyn Bay Rugby Festival in Wales.

The six-day festival will take place between Thursday 6 and Wednesday April 12 at Parc Eirias where the selected 50 players, split into two teams – the Reds and the Blues – will play fixtures against Welsh sides Dragons, Scarlets and RGC.

Since the new year, the players have been involved in two training days and three training camps in preparation for the festival, following regional fixtures and two East v West games.

Harry a student of St Leonards School in St Andrews said: “It’s a great privilege for me to be selected for Scotland U16s.

“Both my school and Madras Rugby Club have always been very supportive of me and I am surrounded by fantastic team mates who push each other to improve in every game we play.”

St Leonards itself is equally as proud of its young student’s call-up.

The school’s rugby coach and former Scottish Rugby internationalist, Andrew Turnbull, said it was worthy recognition for Harry’s hard work and determination at his game.

He said: “He has demonstrated great dedication to both his school team, Madras Rugby Club and his training development so far with the Scottish U16 Squad, so it is great to see his hard work being rewarded.

“Harry is an intelligent and skillful rugby player with a great attitude on and off the pitch, so we look forward to seeing how he progresses during this season and in years to come.”

Players will be assessed throughout the entire six-day festival, with their efforts at every training day and camp factored in to their final player report.

Mungo, a student at The Waid Academy in Anstruther said “It’s an honour to be selected for Scotland and I’m absolutely delighted.

“It’s great for my school, for Madras Rugby Club and my selection is a reflection of the support they have both offered me and my team mates over my years playing rugby”

Ed Dunstan, head Coach of Madras U16s said the inclustion of the local pair, reflected well on the quality of player and coaching at the club.

“Harry and Mungo form part of a great team of boys here at Madras and their selection is a great honour for all of us involved with the team, the club and their schools that they have been selected,” he said.

Bryan Easson, head coach of the Scotland U16 Reds, cited the importance of challenging these players.

He added: “We’re very excited about this group of players.”
