Stefan returns home as build up to Rio 2016 really kicks in

The Auchtermuchty para-athlete has been based in Loughborough full time with his quest for Rio at the forefront of his mind.

But he recently made the decision, with support from Triathlon Scotland, British Triathlon and Scottish Disability Sport to relocate back to his northern roots in Scotland.

Stefan will now train alongside Triathlon Scotland squad athletes at Stirling University.

Commenting on Stefan’s relocation, Triathlon Scotland’s head of performance, Fiona Lothian said: “I am sure Stefan will be a great addition to the squad.

“He brings with him a strong training history and I am sure his enthusiasm for the sport will be infectious. The rest of the team are looking forward to him joining them.”

Stefan enjoyed a successful swimming career, representing Fife and Scotland in Scottish and British Championships, gaining considerable distinction as both a junior and senior.

He missed out on the Paralympic Games in London 2012 and the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow, both by the smallest of margins, and due to illness.

These disappointments led to Stefan’s retirement from competitive performance swimming; however British Swimming passed his name on to British Triathlon as a potential Para triathlete for Rio 2016.

On his move Stefan commented: “I believe the best place to be for me is back in Scotland, with my friends and family, training alongside the squad at Stirling.

“I have had a great time in Loughborough but believe this is the best decision for me to help take me to the next level in my sport.

“I am really happy and excited to be back and would like to thank British Triathlon, Triathlon Scotland and Scottish Disability Sport for all their ongoing support.”

Alasdair Donaldson British Triathlon Paralympic talent and development manager said Stefan had achieved “a great deal” in the 15 months since he came into triathlon including racing in four World Paratriathlon events last year, which culminated in a sixth place finish in Detroit’s ITU World Paratriathlon event.

“He has developed both his physiological and skill qualities very quickly within our training hub at Loughborough University,” added Mr Donaldson.

“Moving forward both British Triathlon and Stefan believe that training in the Stirling Performance Centre is the best place for him.

“He will be able to continue his development long term, based at home and accessing world class coaching and facilities every day.”
