Syme, whose earlier strokeplay efforts saw him qualify for the knock out latter stages as leading qualifier, held an advantage over Nicols Maheut pretty much all the way round their pairing.

Maheut was two behind with three to play but the Frenchman birdied the 16th and 17th to get back to all square.

The match went to the second extra hole and the 26-year-old from Rouen holed from 7ft to secure his place in the last eight and knock out the local golfer.

The prize for winning the championship, being held in Wales, is enormous, with places in both the Open Championship and US Open in 2017 secured by taking the title.

The winner is also invited to compete at the Masters.
