Title-winning defenceman targets another championship with Fife Flyers

The defenceman was part of the Sheffield Steelers side that finished top of the standings last season, ironically clinching the title in the barn he now calls home.

Up against clubs like Sheffield and Nottingham, who run four lines and carry spare imports, challenging for the overall EIHL title may seem like a tall order for Fife.

But Moyer insists anything is possible.

“I don’t think it’s unrealistic to say we can win the league title,” he said.

“I have the personality where if I don’t believe we can win the whole thing then what’s the point?

“That’s why I play. I’ve been lucky the last few years to win a few different things. Winning last year was a great experience, and hopefully we can do that here as well.

“The most important thing is never to get too high or too low.

“It’s a long grind and if you go a weekend without any points it just means you have to pull your boot straps a little tighter and go after some four point weekends.

“We’ve got a good group in here - and sometimes that’s the most important thing to be a championship team. I firmly believe in this club and I think everyone in the room does too.”

To challenge for any honours this season, Moyer accepts that the team will need to play better than the weekend past, which resulted in heavy defeats to Dundee Stars and Cardiff Devils.

“It didn’t go as planned,” he said. “We expected a tough game in Cardiff, but we played well for the first 15 minutes and if we could’ve got through that first period 0-0 it could have been a different story.

“On Saturday night against Dundee we turned the puck over too many times - we’ve been our own worst enemy.

“When you get into run and gun, and you’re playing from behind the whole game, those are the toughest ones to win.

“Sometimes when you don’t get a couple of bounces early on you start trying to force things. That’s the worst thing we can do.

“We should have a stronger belief in ourselves that we are a good club - because we are - and if we stick to the plan we have we should be successful.

“If the plan doesn’t seem to be working for five or 10 minutes there’s no reason to sway from it. Hopefully it’s a lesson learned and we can regroup and get back on the right track.”

Moyer has been playing on a short-handed defence due to an injury to Phil Paquet and he admits he has had to restrain his game in order to make it through 60 minutes.

“It’s tough at the start of the year but you’ve just got to change your game a little bit,” he said.

“Personally, I’d like to have more of an impact offensively and hopefully once we have Phil back, I’ll have a little less ice time and I can be a little more effective when I’m on.

“That being said, all of us who have played, I think we’ve been fairly solid and as a group of five or six, I don’t think we can be too disappointed with how things have gone.

“We’ve definitely done a lot of good things that are reasons to build on for the rest of the year.

“We just have to weather the storm until we got Phil back - I think we have - and we can only go in the right direction from here.”
