World class efforts from area's rowers

Local clubs from St Ayles Rowing Club Anstruther, Crail and Pittenweem travelled over to Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland to compete in the second World St Ayles Skiff championships in a six day long event.

The competition saw fellow clubs travel from afar afield as Tasmania, USA, Canada and Europe to battle it out for gold in 21 different categories.

There was great success for the visiting clubs from this area with Anstruther bringing home gold in the U19 male and open women and Crail winning gold in the Womens 40+ category.

There were more medals won by both clubs with Anstruther winning silver in the mixed open B, womens 50+, mixed 60+ as well as securing bronze in the mixed U19, mens open B, mens 50+ and Crail winning silver in the mixed 50+ and bronze in the mixed 40+.

Pittenweem were unlucky to suffer some damage to their boat enroute however with a temporary repair their small contingency in conjunction with Wormit were still able to compete and win places in two finals.

A spokesman for the competing clubs said the event had proved more than worthwhile.

She said: “In all a great result for the east of Fife clubs with Anstruther finishing fourth overall and Crail in joint sixth.”
