Acquired taste for live music in Kirkcaldy

An enterprising Fife College student aims to make a noise in the music business by setting up her own events management company.

Sarah May (27), who is studying sound production at the Stenton campus in Glenrothes, has teamed up with her friend Chloe Watson (23), to form Acquired Taste Productions, focusing on putting on and promoting live events in Fife and Edinburgh.

Sarah said she got the bug after promoting a show last year.

“I put on a gig in Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh last November and it did pretty well.

“It was stressful leading up to it, worrying if anyone would turn up, but they did! It was a great feeling and, after that, I thought it’s something I would like to do again.

“Chloe came to me in January and we thought we’d make a good team. We have skills that complement each other, so we went into business together.”

Chloe said: “I know more about the performing side, whereas Sarah is good with the technical things. I’m a complete technophobe!”

The pair have now set up a run of six shows at the Cupcake Coffee Box on Kirkcaldy High Street, with three acts performing on each night.

“We heard there was a chance to put something on so we came and met with the owner, Mike Lowe, and we’ve got acoustic gigs, one each month, lined up for the next six months in the lounge.

“It’ll be a maximum of two people playing each time, so there’s no full bands. They’re slimming themselves down and it’ll be really stripped back.

“It ties in nicely with the regeneration of the High Street. It’s a small step but it’s in the right direction.”

The pair say the gigs are something different for locals.

“It’s not a boozy night out with a huge audience and it’s good for the bands to play locally too and get some experience of playing live.”

The first show will take place on March 12 at 6pm, featuring Esperi, Amy Louise Rogers and Marmion.

At all six shows, the acts have 40 minutes, with a 20-minute break between each.

Tickets are £3 and will be available on the door or in person from the venue, but spaces are limited. The dates confirmed so far are; March 12, April 9, May 7, June 11, July 9 and August 6.
