All revved up and ready to go for Kirkcaldy Bikes in the Park

The popular event is back for the third year, and this year’s programme is even bigger and better than before, with trophies set to be awarded in 29 different categories, including a brand new ‘Best in Show’ prize.

The event on Sunday from 10.30am is being staged by Kirkcaldy and District Motor Club with many of the trophies donated by some of the biggest names in motorbike racing and their families, as well as local businesses.

Every type of motorbike will be on show, from vintage to modern, veteran, classic, competition and road, as well as trade stands and autojumblers.

And, with the disappointment of having to cancel the Sand Races on Kirkcaldy beach for good still weighing heavily, organisers are hoping that Bikes in the Park - which harks back to the years between 1948-88 when the Beveridge Park became Scotland’s first ever road racing circuit - will be a great success.

Jake Drummond, secretary of Kirkcaldy and District Motor Club, said he had been contacted by many enthusiasts from around Scotland and further afield keen to attend.

“We were very upset at having to bring the Sand Races to an end due to poor competitor numbers because of dates clashing with other racing events.

“It has made us even more determined that Bikes in the Park is a success,” he said.

“Now that there is no longer just one single body which is responsible for planning the racing calendar events it means that there will be events competing for entries.

“But Bikes in the Park is a unique event in that it is free for people to come along and see what will probably be one of the greatest number of vintage and classic racing and other bikes in the one place at the one time.

“There is always a huge amount of nostalgia on the day.

“It brings together a lot of the remaining racing greats from the heyday of British bike racing, both past and present.”

Sunday’s exhibition of bikes will be preceded on the Saturday night by a social get-together of the racing fraternity in Kirkcaldy Rugby Club from 7pm, featuring a talk by Iain Duffus, a well-known name from the Scottish racing circuit of the 1990s.

Jake added: “All we need now is the support of the public and the motorcycling fraternity.

“The show is there to promote the sport and pastime we all love. This is what our club is here to do .

“No matter what the weather, this Sunday please make the effort to show us that what we do is worthwhile and come along.”
