Animator takes Kirkcaldy film to big screen

Actor Scott Kyle – Angels’ Share, Kajaki and Outlander – offered to collaborate with Fraser after hearing about his project ‘Bab: The Man Who Took Too Much’ a short animation film in which the lead character is Bab Cunningham, the well-off owner of a scrap yard.

“As artistic director at the Bathgate Regal – a community theatre with a varied programme – Scott offered to help me,,” explained Fraser. “Offering his support and the facilities at the Regal will help raise funds for the first instalment of the film as well as raise awareness of animation and visual effects.”

The showcase event at the Bathgate Regal on September 25 at 1pm will give people a chance to see some of Fraser’s other animated work – including My City starring Brian Cox –as well as the current film’s progress.

Most notably, the scrapyard artwork has been developed through research around Kirkcaldy .

Fraser said: “I have been around Randolph industrial estate and collected more images and observed the way the rain reacted with the ground, as well as many old shipping containers which will make up parts of Bab’s office.”

Once complete the film will be recognisable as Kirkcaldy but will have undergone the visual effects of CGI (computer-generated imagery).

“I hope people will travel from Fife to this event to celebrate animation and visual effects and to get a taste for it. Animation is for all ages – adults and kids will go to see a Dreamworks, Pixar or Disney film .

“It is about appreciating the art of good storytelling and with a series with characters such as Bab, you get to know them over a long period of time.”
