Actor Stewart Porter returns to Fife to star in spy thriller

The 53-year-old will take to the stage in St Andrews at The Byre Theatre tomorrow at 7.30 and at the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy on Wednesday, September 21.

Stewart, who is from Newport-On-Tay plays Hans Dietrich Genscher, a German statesman in the play by Michael Frayn, which is based on a true story.

The action takes the audience to 1970’s West Germany to tell a tale of political intrigue, espionage and betrayal.

Democracy has been described as a combination of the fascination of a John Le Carre thriller and the dynamism of The West Wing or House of Cards.

It is directed by Michael Emans, Artistic Director of Rapture Theatre who said: “I am thrilled that this great play will be enjoyed by audiences across Scotland. The resurgence in the appreciation of John Le Carre’s work and the post Brexit climate of political upheaval, infighting and betrayal make this play highly prescient.

A familiar face on TV in River City, Shetland and Taggart Stewart also treads the boards in leading roles at the Citizens and Tron in Glasgow. His big screen credits include a role in the Danish drama Valhalla Rising.
