“They had great players like Roddy Georgeson, Billy Mitchell and Bobby Reid there at the time,” he said.

“Bill Baxter was the manager then and he was great with me. Making my debut at just 16 years of age was daunting looking back, but it didn’t worry me too much - I was confident.”

Asked for a particular memory Donald says: “The whole 15 years. I can honestly say that.

“It was brilliant for the whole time I was there. They were great times with great people.

“Actually, one of the best times was when we battled it out with Hibs for the old First Division title in 1980/81.

“We had ended the previous season with a great run from January then we took that into the next season.

“I think we were 10 points clear of Hibs at one stage, but in the end it slipped away from us.

“It was a shame but you’ve got to remember that we were all part-time, coming in to train a couple of times a week after working all day. It was tough but overall we played really well that year.”

In 1982 Donald was awarded a testimonial by the club which he says was an especially memorable occasion.

“At that time Swansea were top of the First Division in England, which is now the Premiership.

“John Toshack was the manager and he brought up all the big players to take part. It was absolutely brilliant.”

After leaving the club in 1985 aged 30, Donald signed for Glenrothes Juniors but it didn’t work out.

“I think it was because I had been so long at the Rovers. It just wasn‘t for me.

“I’ve not been to Stark’s Park for a while so I’m really looking forward to the Hall of Fame.”
