Lottery cash helps light up Tayport

The local community council has been successful in its bid for more than £7000 from the Awards for All scheme, which will be used to help light up the town centre.

It will be added to the £5500 funding from Ferryport-on-Craig Commonty Fund and the £1040 sponsorship from North Fife Rotary Club to create a festive spectacle.

And for Tayport Primary School P7 pupil Catherine Scott, the official switch-on event later this month will be a proud moment.

Her design was chosen for the fitting on the lamp standard nearest the school – one of nine to be installed between the school and the Gregory Hall.

There’ll also be tree wraps at the entrance to the library.

The lights will be supplied and erected by Ladybank-based Blachere Illumination UK and the street lighting team at Fife Council will co-ordinate the power supplies.

Community Council secretary George Beat said there had been a great response from the schoolchildren to the design competition and entries had been of a high standard.

Headteacher Jane Holmes had been very enthusiasttic and was keen for the children to learn more about the Commonty Fund, which was set up in the 1840s by a railway company that needed to cross common land in order to build a railhead at Tayport Harbour.

“Thanks to all concerned on what is a significant milestone for the town,” said Mr Beat.

“When all the fittings are in place, a celebration switch-on event for the community wlll take place at the Burgh Chambers on Sunday, November 27.”
