Bill Grainger '“ the man behind legendary Fire Island Records

Fire Island was the legendary night club in Princes Street, Edinburgh which ran from May 1978 until September 1988 when the building was sold to Waterstones.

The nightclub swelled to many nights and often completely sold out.

The live acts who came to perform with their latest records reflected the Scottish dance scene with names like Hazell Dean, Village People, Eartha Kitt, Jimmy Ruffin, Jackson Browne, Boystown Gang, Three Degrees and Kelly Marie. Simon Cowell brought his prodigy Sinitta there and Bill organised her album launch in Glasgow and all before So Macho was released to the pop charts.

With so much HI NRG dance hits going around Bill started his own label Clubscene Records and this spawned Academy Street Records and of course Fire Island Records.

At that time he would guest on Radio Clyde for an hour late on Saturday nights while I was presenting 2 – 6am on Radio Forth, Tay and Borders.

I was playing his record releases on radio and in clubs like Suzie Q’s Glenrothes and Clever Dicks in Anstruther. He introduced Clubscene magazine, then managed events and bands like Seventh Avenue who changed their name to Big Fun.
