Forget Mary Berry and Paul Holywood – it’s going to be a battle of the butchers this weekend when three very local establishments go head-to-head to take the title of best steak pie.
The Great Buckhynd Pie Challenge is being organised by Buckhaven Links and will see R & I Moreland Butchers, W,F.Stark and Stuarts of Buckhaven have their tastiest produce judged on Saturday by local youngsters at a day of activities in Buckhaven Community Centre.
Buckhaven Links is a collaborative project involving environmental and community group CLEAR Buckhaven, Fife Council and Planning Aid Scotland.
It is a consultative initiative – a charrette – and Saturday is the culmination of a series of community workshops where people have been getting together to discuss and share ideas for the future of Buckhaven.
It aims to gather the views of the public to share ideas, set priorities and create a shared vision for the shore and town centre.
This will lead to a Masterplan and Community Action Plan for the future of Buckhaven’s Foreshore and town centre.
CLEAR spokesman Ken Haig said that it was vital to involve young people and to encourage the public to support local shops, including the three butchers.
“These shops are at the heart of our community providing much needed products, services and employment,” he said. “Where else can you get three butchers offering quality Scottish products all with a stone’s throw of one another.”
Bob Moreland, of R & I Moreland Butchers, commented: “It is wonderful to see a group like CLEAR tying to make Buckhaven better and helping to stimulate community interest in improving the area.”
Meanwhile, Amos Smith, of WF Stark, said the shop was proud to serve the public the best quality produce and – although in no way hoping to sway the judges – will be serving up free small individual steak pies at the event on Saturday.
Keith Stuart, of Stuarts of Buckhaven, said: “We have always supported the youth in our local areas, whether it be work experience or working closely with schools.
“As a family business, young people are vastly important to the future of the company either being bakers, butchers or customers.
“Any regeneration will only be good for the people in and around Buckhaven.”
The weekend event runs from 10am to 4pm and will also feature a number of tables and stalls to keep people busy in the run up to the Great Buckhynd Steak Pie Challenge.
