BASE, 97 North Street, Leven
It’s been open less than a month, but Base is already proving a solid foundation for a new-look Leven town centre.
Leven’s newest (and self-styled trendiest) bar and restaurant is offering a good-quality venue in the town to go out and eat – with the Caledonian Hotel and Agenda really the only credible alternatives.
Gourmet pizzas, pasta, grills and cocktails are on the menu, in the stripped-back, bright and attractively lit interior, which seats around 40 customers.
Back there recently for the second time inside a week, I stuck with pizza as my main dish preference (preceded by some delicious nachos) but went for a different option from the menu – where the choices are a bit more intriguing than your regular Hawaiian or Margherita.
The Tuscan sausage and mozarella concoction did not disappoint – while I can also highly recommend the marinated chicken, pepperoni and oregano pizza on a BBQ sauce base.
My dining partner was particularly partial to the pina coladas but took a break long enough to enjoy a bruschetta from the starting menu, followed by crab linguine with parmesan for the main course – which, she said, had a good essence of crustacean without being overpowering.
Base also has a good selection of alternative dishes if you’re not in the mood for pizza.
For dessert, my partner opted for tiramisu, but I was presented with a mini-crisis – I was told there was no vanilla ice cream for my tall dollop of Neapolitan.
This could have sparked an international incident, but I requested instead a double helping of my favourite flavour, strawberry, to complement the chocolate.
This probably would have tasted even better – but then the waiter informed me there was some vanilla after all, so I was able to enjoy the full triumvirate of flavours – and absolutely delicious it was too.
Depending on where you sit in Base, the view outside can be a little drab – but since when were the backs of shops meant to be attractive?
Owner Lee Murray hopes Base will help change Leven’s culture for the better and play a role in offering a more attractive and desirable town centre to visit.
Even increasing the choice by just one is making a big difference – and the food is good too, with the staff polite and friendly.
Definitely one to check out – and by supporting Base, we can help it boost Leven’s appeal and give a flagging town centre something to recommend it.
