Explore the wonders of science at this year's festival

Theres plenty of fun to be had at the Fife Science Festival.

Showcasing the wonders of science, covering everything from animals, forensics, gaming and ecology to lasers and light-based technologies, there’s a chance for the whole family to get hands-on with science over the next couple of weekends.

The festival comes to Cowdenbeath Leisure Centre this Saturday and Sunday before moving to Glenrothes on May 13 and 14.

And there will also be some scientific fun taking place in the Kingdom Centre, Glenrothes today (Thursday) when you can join the team from Dundee Science Centre to try experiments that you can do at home using every day ingredients.

Funded by the Scottish Government, Shell UK and Fife Council, the mobile festival will offer a diverse range of free activities for the general public, all coordinated by Dundee Science Centre, and it’s aim is to widen access to science learning.

Local primary pupils will also have the chance to attend science celebration days in Cowdenbeath and Glenrothes where they will experience exciting hands-on activities featuring levitating trains, computer programming and curious creatures.

Ever wondered what it’s like to be an astronaut, a firefighter or a CSI investigator?

This Saturday in Cowdenbeath and next Friday, May 13 at Rothes Halls, Glenrothes, families can take part in ‘A Day in the Life of...’, an event giving an insight into the skills needed to work in a science, technology or engineering role.

And this Saturday in Cowdenbeath and on May 14 in Glenrothes there will be an activity packed day of ‘Science Celebration’ filled with flashes, experiments, space themed activities and animal handling.

There’s also a chance to print your name in chocolate, explore the night sky with the mobile planetarium and discover bug hotels.

Laura Louch, festivals and development manager at Dundee Science Centre, said: “We’re really looking forward to bringing events to the people in Cowdenbeath and Glenrothes with a format that allows us to deliver a festival of events to a wider audience, regardless of their age or interests.”
