A feast of fun at Aberdour festival... with more still to come

The weekend action kicked off with the crowning of the Royal Party and a colourful procession of Roald Dahl characters around the village to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, featuring local school children and organisations.

This was followed by a beach day with children’s entertainers and sandcastle competitions, a raft race and ceilidh at night.

Sunday was the village market with a host of food, drink and craft stalls. The popular Donkey Brae run saw a good entry, and there were plenty of belly laughs at the comedy night.

All this week too there has been a fun packed programme for adults and children alike, with sports competitions and trial sessions, bushcraft skills, games, art displays and a drama night courtesy of the Aberdour Players.

Tomorrow (Friday, August 5) sees the popular Bands by the Sands event featuring ten local bands playing at the beachfront, and the Aberdour Art Festival Exhibition will run from Friday to Sunday at the Old Station Inn. On Saturday there will be the village sports and gala day with races, sword fighting and a come and try sailing taster session.

Sunday sees food and wine tasting, a flower festival and a Songs of Praise at St Columba’s Church as well as a poetry and pints evening with live music.

Philomena Oldfield, festival chairman, said: “It has been going really well. We’re having record numbers coming out to the events and the weather has been kind so far.”

The Bands by the Sands event takes place tomorrow (Friday) from 2pm until midnight with ten local bands performing in the marquee at the playing fields by the Silver Sands.

Tickets cost £5 in advance or £8 on the door (re-entry is permitted) and are available at the festival website.

This is the first time the festival has dedicated a full day to the best of Scottish live music, with the event being heralded as “our own mini-Glastonbury.”

It will feature a mix of singer-songwriters, up-and-coming breakthrough acts and anthemic rock bands including Break the Butterfly, Moonlight Zoo, David Hershaw, The Mona Lisas, Unkeepable, Oceans, Gary Anderson, Amy Rayner, Amy Louise Rogers and Eden Delta.

As well as these headline performances there will be plenty more music to enjoy. Between 4pm and 7pm there will be a Beer & BBQ stall featuring seasonal beers and ales from Eden Mill Brewery.
