Fife girl Abi set to make her dream Fringe debut

Abi Brydon (23), who has Down’s Syndrome and learning disabilities, is a student at the Inspire project, a programme created by Cutting Edge Theatre.

She is preparing to tread the boards in a production called ‘Downs with Love’ which is showing from August 8-12 in Morningside.

‘Downs With Love’ explores the subject of love and disability and challenges what people consider acceptable, as well as highlighting the many complexities and issues surrounding the subject.

It was written by drama lecturer Suzanne Lofthus and is based around the performers’ own experiences.

The play tells the story of Beth, a young girl who has Down’s Syndrome. She lives a very independent life, has her routines, and lives simply but happily. She is helped by a new support worker, Tracy and they soon strike up a friendship.

On a Friday night, she goes to the pub to watch Mark, a local singer. Beth loves Mark but the problem is that Mark loves Tracy who loves both of them. Complex and challenging issues arise for all three.

Abi is no stranger to acting and is currently studying for an NC in Theatre Arts and Performance at Fife College in Dunfermline.

She said: “I have wanted to be an actress since I was a little girl, so this is one of my dreams to be acting at the Edinburgh Festival. One day I would like to be on Coronation Street, which is my favourite television programme.

“I am excited and a bit nervous, but I have been working hard learning my lines with my mum to be ready for the performances.

“A lot of my friends have said they will come and see me, so I am really looking forward to it.”
