Final chance to learn about hero Dunsire

The ‘Robert Dunsire – The Story of a Victoria Cross’ exhibition, which started at the centre last August, has welcomed more than 1500 people, all keen to find out more about the local lad who received the Victoria Cross.

Gary Nurse, from Friends of Methil Heritage Centre, who helped to facilitate the show, said he had been overwhelmed with the response to the exhibition, which charts the soldier’s life, from growing up and working in Buckhaven, to the fateful day when Dunsire put his own life on the line to save the lives of two of his comrades, earning him the VC.

Gary said: “I would like to thank Methil Heritage Friends, Mike Taylor (curator), Bob Jarvie (designer), the East Fife Mail and Fife Cultural Trust staff for helping to make it a success and the Heritage Lottery for funding.

“Also the descendants of Robert Dunsire and the general public who have visited the exhibition, a total of 1549 visitors so far.

“The reaction we have had from Dunsire’s relatives is that we have done him proud.

‘‘It’s made us all proud to give Robert the acknowledgement he rightly deserves.”

The exhibition is due to come to a close this Saturday at 4.30pm.

To conincide with the final day, the centre is also looking forward to welcoming the Fife Council’s MAC bus, which will be available to visitors throughout the day.

And sticking with the war theme, local children are invited along to the centre tomorrow (Thursday) for a poppy mosaic workshop, led by local artist Gemma Coyle.

The event will run from 10.30am to 12.30pm and is open to children from age five to 11 (under eights will need to be accompanied by an adult).
