Food: The magic of Miros

Looking for a place to have some lunch, we came across Miros Cantina Mexicana - a small, brightly coloured Mexican restaurant along towards the west end. It was a smashing find.

The place is tiny and they pack ’em in, but it’s worth finding a table in a corner to enjoy some top notch Mexican food.

In summer the venue offers al fresco dining on Rose Street - to be honest, it was so mild on Sunday they could have made use of the outdoor tables, and there’s no better advert for a restaurant than folk enjoying their food at the front door.

We were looking for a spot of lunch, and the choices offered at Miros were just perfect.

At our tables we were presented with a number of main menus - the full list plus today’s dishes and the specials.

We opted to mix and match - and struck gold.

For starters we opted to share a plate of nachos and a dish of chorizo.

The nachos came in three sizes, and the smallest was the best call we made.

It was a side dish sized portion- just perfect as a starter, and very, very tasty too.

It’s only when you sit down and enjoy a plate of nachos in a restaurant such as Miros do you appreciate how poor the dishes with the same name served by pub chains really are.

The chorizo, complete with mini wraps, was a huge hit.

The portions were generous, and the sausage had a real smokey taste to it.

Both plates were returned pretty much licked clean!

For our main courses we switched to the daily taco menu.

Like all Mexican restaurants the dishes were steak, chicken or veggie, and you took your pick from tortilla or taco shells.

I opted for chargrilled steak and caramelised onion on a softflour tortilla.

The plate came with rice, salsa, sour cream and guacamole, and it was fabulous.

The portion size also hit the spot.

My other half went for pollo monterrey - chicken in a mild, creamy sauce with peppers and cheese plus the standard Mexican accompaniments.

The slice of chicken I pinched was moist and tasty, and, again, the portion size was just spot-on for a lunch time.

Chuck in some soft drinks and the total bill just broke £25, and it was excellent value for money.

We’ll certainly go back to Miros to enjoy a full evening meal.

There is much on the menus we’re both keen to sample, and if this weather holds out, we look forward to a spot of relaxed, outdoor dining just across the Forth.
