Kirkcaldy girl's recipe for success

An eight-year-old Kirkcaldy girl came up with a recipe for success when she decided she wanted to hold a bake sale and coffee morning for Children In Need.

Jessica Holmes, a pupil at Dunnikier Primary School, had been badgering her mum, Natalie since last year’s Children in Need event that she wanted to host her own fundraiser for the worthy charity.

After discussions about how they could make it happen, they decided on a baking event, and Jessica compiled letters for family and friends, to ask if they would help donate some home baking.

She went into her local McDonalds in Asda to ask the manager if they could donate some cups to allow her to serve tea and coffee, and also wrote a letter to a friend who is a very good baker who donated a Pudsey cake which they then raffled on the day.

To help boost her sales, Jessica also wrote a letter to her head teacher at Dunnikier Primary to ask if she would allow her to sell some home baking to the staff and she was over the moon when Mrs Hatch agreed to her idea.

Jessica’s bake sale took place on November 18 at her home.

Mum Natalie said: “The house was buzzing with people who came to support her and she was delighted to raise over £400 on the day, which Lloyds TSB Bank has agreed to match.

“I am extremely proud of Jessica’s enthusiasm and her wish to do such a kind and thoughtful gesture at such a young age.

Jessica added: “I really wanted to do it after we watched a video of loads of children who need help because they are very ill and the nurses don’t have enough money to help them. I am lucky because I’m not ill.”
