Kirkcaldy school nominated for eco award

Kirkcaldy High School’s alternative production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ has just finished a successful run at the school, and Lesley Mellon, the school’s principal art teacher, used her skills to help make costumes from donated garments and materials which she reused for the new wardrobe.

Now the department has been put forward by Growing Kirkcaldy for a Beautiful Scotland Eco Award for its recycling efforts.

Judith Kerr, secretary of the umbrella organisation which is currently working towards a Beautiful Scotland award, was at one of the performances and was wowed by it.

“I was very impressed to hear and see that all the costumes in the show had been made from recycled materials and it shows a great deal of initiative on the part of those who made them.”

Mrs Mellon, principal teacher of art and design, who has been at the school for 28 years, added: “The style of the show was influenced by Steampunk fashion, in particular the costumes which I designed and made myself. These are all ‘eco friendly’ in that they are almost entirely created from recycled clothes and materials found around the home and workplace.

“I am delighted that they were such a success, as was the whole show which was produced and directed by Tanya Turnbull our principal teacher of expressive arts. It’s great to be nominated for an award.

“Everyone worked hard and performed their numbers with enthusiasm, some great singing and a heart melting role from Toto the dog - played by 8-year-old Kaiya Bruce, daughter of our drama teacher.
