Let's get on the ball for Raith Rovers' keepie-uppie challenge!

Raith Rovers coach Craig Easton and his development squad braved a blizzard to launch the event which will take place in conjunction with the Farmer’s Market this Saturday at Kirkcaldy’s Town Square.

‘Easty’ said: “The competition is part of our Jim Baxter celebrations.

“We’re having an evening in the Adam Smith Theatre where we will being showing footage from that famous 1967 game because it’s 50 years since Scotland beat England 3-2 down at Wembley.

“Jim Baxter was one of the star players at the time and he started his career at Raith Rovers.

“Of course he famously did keepie-uppies down the wing, so that’s what the competition is all about.”

The challenge will run between 11am-1pm and is open to all schoolchildren from P5 onwards, and not only will Craig and his players be there but the Farmer’s Market will join in with the event with stallholders making it a special football-themed day.

The challenge is to juggle the ball down a course and finish by scoring into a goal, with children competing in three categories; P5, P6 and P7 will start at 11.15am, S1 and S2 will start at 11.45am and S3, S4, S5 and S6 will start at 12.15pm.

Craig said: “ACA Sports have kindly donated some prizes and there will be six winners taken from Saturday who will come to Stark’s Park and take part in the final at half time during the Rovers match versus Morton on April 15, with the winner getting the star prize.”

The prize will be presented at the forthcoming Jim Baxter celebration event on Monday, April 17, which will feature a host of star guests, and will raise funds for development squad.

Tickets for the event are available at £20 for a standard ticket or £30 for VIP, which will includes a pie and a pint, and chance to meet the special guests in the Beveridge Suite at the Adam Smith Theatre before the show.

Craig added: “The keepie-uppie challenge is just to get kids involved and get them playing football.

“That’s how I started, kicking a ball about in the street and who knows, maybe we can find the next Jim Baxter.

“We’ll be here on Saturday morning to meet people, have a wee chat and tell them more about the work we do at the development squad.”
