Near full house for world premiere of Canned Laughter

There was a near full house for the first preview - the very first chance to see the new stage show which stars Allan Stewart, Andy Gray and Grant Stott - and they must have been thrilled at the reception.

Canned Laughter tells the story of a comedy trio from Scotland on the cusp of a major breakthrough in the 1970s, making the leap from the clubs in Scotland to England and, ultimately, on to the London Palladium and even television.

It’s told in flashback from the very different perspective of each member of the group, Alec, Gus and Rory, plus Gabriel Quigley as Rory’s sister and the one who sorts out their bookings,

It’s a story of big breaks and broken dreams.

It’s rich with humour but it also has moments of deep regret and even rancour which test and strain the ties that bind, as they find themselves together decades after the big time first beckoned.

Their own journeys have all been very different, and the life changing decisions that impact on others for years form the core of the narrative.

Co-written by Stewart and Ed Curtis, Canned Laughter packs a lot into its two acts as it makes full use of the excellent set to switch from backstage to centre stage where they bring to life the variety style of 70s comedy acts that we all know and love ... and which still make us smile.

It’s a fantastic show - hugely enjoyable, laugh out loud funny throughout, and safe in the hands of a cast with a strong rapport.
