The first kitchen opened its doors to the public at the weekend, at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Victoria Gardens.

Visitors were offered an often much-needed hot bowl of soup and a hot drink, and volunteers were on hand to give out emergency items such as blankets, clothes, shoes and waterproofs.

One of the volunteers, Kelly McAllister, said the kitchen wasn’t just for homeless people, but low income families too and no referrals were required.

She added: “Some people on the streets do have homes, but are struggling to heat their homes and feed their families. Our main aim here isn’t just to feed people, but to get them back into work or education. ”

The next kitchen will be on Saturday, April 2, from 12pm to 2pm.
