Rose Queen's reign heralds Leven Civic Week

Saturday sees the arrival of the town’s summer Civic Week festival for 2016 – ushered in as always by the Rose Queen ceremony at Carberry House.

This year, St Agatha’s Primary School pupil Alisha Auchterlonie has the honour of donning the famous sash and robes as she is crowned Rose Queen for this year.

She’ll have eight attendants from among her classmates in the regal party – four boys and four girls – along with 28 flower girls.

The crowning will be performed by Alex Laing – the recently-retired janitor at Alisha’s school.

The entertainment begins at noon with a host of stalls, dancers, gymnastics, accordion music by Walter Ireland, Highland dancing and school choirs, as well as appearances by pandas Rosie and Queenie.

The fancy dress competition takes place at 2pm, with the crowning at 3pm, followed by the traditional street parade.

On Sunday, there will be a service at St Agatha’s Chapel, in which Alisha will be giving one of the readings, while the Rose Queen entourage will be visting senior citizen’s care homes around Leven, including Glenburnie, Scoonie House, Leven Beach and Carlow Court.

At 4pm that day, there will be a car treasure hunt leaving from Letham Glen.

Monday sees a bowls tournament at Leven Bowling Club, while on Tuesday afternoon, Alisha is due to visit the MyBus Sunshine Club, a pensioner’s group which meets in the former Scoonie Bowling Club.

The popular sandcastle competition returns to Leven beach at 4.30pm the same day.

June 15 sees the return of the Civic Week Disney afternoon, which Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto will be putting in a 1.30pm appearance at Letham Glen.

A new event is being held next Thursday – a fashion show in Mcphail’s at 7pm, with donated goods paraded by volunteer models on behalf of Cancer Research.

On June 17, there is inter-schools’ netball at Mountfleurie Primary School, followed in the evening by a party at Leven’s British Legion, to help the Civic Week crew wind down after a busy week.

The next day, there’s a visit to see the residents at Anderson Court, while Civic Week comes to a conclusion on Sunday, June 19 with an afternoon of pool, dominoes and darts tournaments, starting at one-hour intervals, at Mcphail’s in North Street.

There is £100 prize money up for grabs in each, and the teams will be playing for the Jimmy Drysdale Memorial Trophy.
