Skate Jam rolling back into Fife this weekend

The competition, which is guaranteed to attract some of the central region’s best skaters, is now in its 14th year and has grown into one of the most prestigious in the calendar.

And, thanks to sponsorship from Kendo’s Coffee, Forth Music and digitalmediafife.com, the prizes package, which features Action Cams, iPod Nanos and clothing vouchers, is especially generous this year.

David Gillespie, a senior youth worker at Kirkcaldy YMCA, oversees the fundraising work undertaken by organisers The Crew Project/YMSC.

He said: “If previous years are anything to go by, we’ll be expect between 60-80 competitors from all over Fife and beyond and between 150-200 spectators throughout the day.

“As well as the skating, riding, blading and scooting, we’ll also have music from local DJ Alloy (Lloyd Young) who is a local skater as well as a vinyl DJ, and local drum group Resonate will also be kicking off the start of the comp.”

The competition, which runs between 12.30 and 4pm is free to enter and registration is on the day between 11 and 12 noon. There are two age categories –16 and under and 17 and over – and an Active Festival event offering free activities for young people runs alongside the main event.

There will also be the Active Festival event running alongside the Skate Jam, Fife Council’s Community Learning & Development Youth Work team, Youth 1st, Clued Up and Kirkcaldy YMCA will be carrying out various fun activities for young people that aren’t taking part in the Skate Jam throughout the day and will be advertising the Summer youth work programmes on offer during the School holidays.
