St Andrews Museum has Easter holidays all sewn up

Italian Laidwork, from the Wemyss School of Needlework, which features in the exhibition at St Andrews Museum.

Running until May, it is the first major exhibition of work outside the school since 1936.

Throughout its run, the exhibition is accompanied by a complementary programme of events, including workshops geared especially towards children and families.

‘Darling Daffodils’ is the first event, and takes place tomorrow (Saturday), from 1.30pm to 3pm. It is a free children’s workshop, suitable for ages five to 11, with variety of spring-themed craft activities, inspired by one of the embroideries on display in the exhibition.

Children will be able to make their own daffodils which can be taken home after the event.

‘Crossing Your Stitches’ is on Thursday, March 31, 1.30-3 pm, when children – aged 5-11 – will learn cross stitch techniques and be encouraged to make embroideries inspired by the exhibition.

‘Patterns and Print’ is on Thursday, April 7, with two sessions 1.30-2.15pm for 3-5 year olds, and 2.30-3.15pm for 6-11 year olds. Participants will recreate the prick-and-pounce embroidery method, which was used at the Wemyss School of Needlework to transfer patterns onto the fabric.
