Sweet taste of success at CakeFest

CakeFest, held at The Bay in Kinghorn, raised over £735 for the Fife Hospice at Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital, on Sunday as enthusiastic would-be Mary Berrys and Paul Hollywoods showed off their considerable skills in a fun baking competition which was open to all.

The social event, organised by Inverkeithing man Darrian Wilson in memory of his partner Helen Morton, who passed away in the hospice last year, drew a good crowd of people from around Fife who were all invited to act as the judges on the day, with prizes presented in a children’s category as well as adult cake and adult cupcake sections.

And each of the worthy winners received a specially engraved CakeFest wooden spoon as their prize.

Entries ranged from a stunning two-tiered thistle cake and beautiful chocolate cake to sparkling cupcakes, lemon cake and even a clootie dumpling!

Prizes were presented on appearance as well as taste, and everyone who took part went away happy – and very full.

As well as the baking competition, the fundraising total was boosted by a raffle, ‘guess the dog’s name’ and bake sale.

Those who went along also had the chance to view a stunning selection of photographs taken by keen snapper Helen, who together with Darrian was a keen Scout leader and ran a shop in Inverkeithing selling outdoor and camping equipment as well as Scout and Guide uniforms and accessories.

Darrian said: “When Helen was in the hospice I noticed that it could do with some little added bits and pieces to make the experience better for those having to spend time there.

“The first CakeFest was held last year and raised money to buy special self watering planters and hanging baskets to make the hospice garden look a bit more colourful.

“I am delighted with the amount raised and it was a nice relaxed afternoon with friends and family which raised a lot of money again for the hospice.

“Thanks to everyone who came along and took part, it was a real group effort.”
