Fife girl is a cut above the rest!

Sofia Lazmirski (12), a first year pupil at Balwearie High School, decided to take the plunge after watching a television programme featuring young cancer sufferers.

One of the stories in particular touched her so much that she immediately told her parents that she wanted to do something to help, and the idea for the drastic haircut came about.

And last week she had her hair, which was right down her back, cut to a new short style, with her locks sent to The Little Princess Trust to be made into wigs for children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment.

In addition to her hair donation, a Just Giving page set up by Sofia’s mum Dennise on her behalf has raised £1760 for Cancer Research.

Sofia, who has a little sister Hope (4), told the Press: “One of the stories struck a cord, where a boy of 15 had found a lump, only to be told there was nothing they could do. He lost his fight and died at the age of just 16. This really hit me hard and made me realise it can happen to anyone so I decided that I wanted to do something to help.

“When my mum set up the fundraising page I hoped to raise £500, but thanks to everyone’s generous donations I’ve smashed my target and raised over £1700. I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from family and friends and can’t thank them enough.”

Mum Dennise added: “Her selfless actions will hopefully put a smile on the face of a child whose life has been affected by this horrible disease.”
