Kirkcaldy band's addition adds some funk to festival line-up

The band, currently marking 30 years in the business, are the latest addition to the event which runs from March 16-18.

They play in the Adam Smith Theatre’s Beveridge Suite on Saturday,March 17, following David Tennant’s film and sold out ‘audience with’ show.

The gig will be in two parts.

‘What the Funk – A History Of Soul To Funk’ is a 40-minute piece first premiered at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe, with a run of nine consecutive nights and five straight sell outs.

A narrator guides the audience from the early days of Stax and southern soul through to the bass grooves and back beats of what became known as “the funk”.

Lights Out By Nine takes the role of the house band, featuring the classic combination of the Hammond organ and a full horn section, as they chart the sounds of Booker T, Otis Redding and Arthur Conley, through to Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Commodores, and the Average White Band to James Brown.

The show is produced by John Murray, Kirkcaldy’s award-winning DJ.

The second half features a LOBN live band set.

The gig forms part of the band’s 30th anniversary.

LOBN’s career highlights include recording at Maida Vale Studios in London for the BBC, appearing before a full house at the Barrowlands in Glasgow, achieving top five radio chart success in America and sharing stages with countless household names.

Last September, at the legendary King Tuts in Glasgow, they were joined on stage by AWB founder member, Hamish Stuart and, more recently, made their long awaited debut at the Celtic Connections Festival.

Dougie Hunter, bass player said: “We are delighted to be part of the festival in our home town in our 30th anniversary year.”

Marilyn Livingstone, chief executive of the Adam Smith Global Foundation, said: “This year’s programme is much more diverse. ‘It is great to have a live band of such a high calibre taking part.”
