New writers' group for Burntisland

Joel Mason (55), an actor, dancer, musician, stage director, lyricist and man with many other strings to his bow, came across to Scotland to take part in the Edinburgh Festival in 2004 and after returning to the States for a brief spell, returned to live here the following year.

Now, after making the seaside town his new home, and despite suffering from Parkinson’s for the past decade, he is keen to turn his talents to helping others to fulfill their creative dreams by setting up a writers’ group in the town.

An inaugural meeting of people interested in taking part was held on Sunday in Joel’s house in Dick Crescent, and although only one person attended, others have said they are keen to be involved but were unable to make it.

Joel said: “It was while I was travelling by train and passing through Burntisland that I saw the summer fair and I wondered what the town would be like in the winter months, and that’s how I ended up staying here.

“I was fascinated by the transient nature of it. Burntisland is a real jewel and I have met some really interesting people since I moved here in February.”

Joel is currently working as a lyricist on a project called ‘The Bench’ which is set to premiere in New York in January next year and he still travels occasionally to America for his work, although the disease limits what he is able to do.

“I have been involved in writers’ groups before and it is a great way to meet new people as well as encourage people to unlock their creative side and realise their potential,” he said.
