Review: Burgers & Beers, Edinburgh

On a day out in the capital, my companion and I were on the lookout for a new eatery in the old town.

Having passed this place several times before, a quick TripAdvisor search confirmed that many visitors in the past had given it a big thumbs up – so through the doors we went.

Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a small, intimate eatery; the narrow entranceway and bar to the front is deceiving, but head on through and you’ll be greeted in the back. Be prepared for a smokey, barbecue atmosphere!

They do have big extractor fans to make sure you can actually see your other dinner guests, but it does make it a bit chilly, and I did have to keep my jacket on.

The name does explain everything you need to know. If you’re not a burger fan, then it might not be for you.

A meat-lover’s heaven yes, but not ideal for those averse to red meat.

The choice is extensive, with some intriguing names, including the Anna Nicole Smith and the Joe Pesci.

But with every burger priced over £10.95, with no sides, it is definitely one of the more expensive burger joints I’ve tried.

My dining partner opts for the Mac Attack, which comes with a mac and cheese fritter, Virginia sweet cured bacon, mature Scottish cheddar, lettuce and beer mustard.

I go for the ‘Build your own’ option, choosing a beef patty with chilli con carne and bacon on a brioche bun.

It’s a combination I have tried at other similar set-ups, and I have to be honest and say this wasn’t as good.

The chilli wasn’t saucy enough and the whole thing was a bit dry. If you’re looking for your fix of chips, they need to be ordered separately unfortunately, so we opted for one portion of fries and a portion of the haggis fritters.

Those were the absolute highlight of the meal, so tasty and not at all oily. They were a good size too, and four on the plate was the perfect amount for two people sharing.

Overall, if a burger is your thing, give this place a go – but be prepared to pay for it.
