It was the work of these craftsmen from six centuries ago that fired the imagination of writer Dan Brown, when he penned the Da Vinci Code- the book which later became a smash-hit film starring Tom Hanks.

This Hollywood link led to an explosion of interest in the building and swelled visitor numbers.

But this time of the year is perfect for a visit. Not only have the summer season visitors gone, but the Midlothian countryside around looks stunning.

The chapel will host a series of special events including a range of different musical styles, visits by candlelight and will be the stage for a new adaptation of the Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol.

These special events include folk, pop and multi-genre original music, poetry set to musical scores from the likes of Vaughan Williams, Roger Quilter and Herbert Hughes and in keeping with the history of the chapel, a Musical History of Mediaeval Scottish Kings.

Visiting the chapel

It is these intricate carvings which draw the visitors – and you’ll need plenty of time to see them all. That’s why the attraction, which opens seven days a week, splits visiting times into 90 minute sessions and limits numbers for each session.

This allows time for a talk by a Chapel Guide and then free time to explore the carvings in comfort. There is something to delight everyone, but top of most people’s list are the Green Men, the Chapel Angels and the Apprentice Pillar.

Rosslyn Chapel, took over 40 years to build – and even then it wasn’t finished! It was founded by Sir William St Clair in 1446 and is now preserved and managed by Rosslyn Chapel Trust, which ensures your ticket money goes towards its conservation.
