At a time when she was forced to close her business, this local woman is putting her skills to another use.

A local dressmaker is using her sewing skills to make face masks during the current coronavirus crisis.

Loraine Walker, who runs Loraine Walker Couture in Kinghorn High Street, is selling washable fabric face masks online to help people who are looking to protect themselves during the pandemic.

Although they are not clinical grade, Loraine has been using a special fabric for the lining which does offer greater protection than normal fabrics.

She explained: “As with many many businesses, four weeks ago, we had to close our doors and our businesses basically ceased overnight.

“After one week of tidying and cleaning the shop, a friend, who was very concerned about this pandemic, asked me to make some face masks, as they were impossible to get hold of anywhere.

“I tried and tweaked a few designs and eventually worked out the best for fit, and have been selling them online.

“I have been kept so busy with orders from all over the UK.

“I make it clear these are not clinical grade, but I use a special fabric for lining, which offers greater protection.

“I issue clear safety guidance with every order and there is growing evidence that wearing fabric face masks offers more protection than

wearing nothing.”

Loraine has been creating the masks in a huge variety of colours and prints, including glitzy ones and kids sizes too.

She added: “I have also completed a large order for a homeless charity in Edinburgh who were struggling to get any type of masks for their front-line volunteers.

“As a dressmaker, I am very fortunate that I can turn my skills from gowns and bridal wear, to something that people need right now, and it helps keep my business afloat during these difficult times.”
