Parents' dismay over plans to close '˜vital' service at Fife schools

Education and Children Services plan to cut the current classes at Mountfleurie and Crossgates primary schools from the current three days to two before closing it for good next January as part of a new “outreach model”.

The children will then attend their local primary full time, receiving their extra support in class.

Colin Davidson, chair of the school board at Mountfleurie, said: “Having spoken to some of the parents and union colleagues I am baffled at these proposals.

“The lack of transparency, educational philosophy and meaningful consultation with parents, staff and trade unions is totally unacceptable.

“This is a valuable resource and I will do all I can to campaign with the parents to ensure these proposals are scrutinised by politicians of all political parties, the educational philosophy underpinning them is fully examined and the needs of our pupils and their families are put first.”

Shelagh McLean, head of service at Education and Children’s Services, said: “The specialist staff will all remain in post and we will be ensuring they provide support in schools across Fife where there are children who would benefit.

“Staff have been meeting with parents to discuss these changes and assure families their children will continue to be supported by them.”
