Vandals target Fife cemetery

Two reports have been received by police outlining vandalism that has occurred at Hayfield cemetery in Kirkcaldy between Wednesday, October 5, and Sunday, October 16.

A further report was made to police on Thursday, October 13, informing officers that a group of young people were loitering near the cemetery.

The first incident happened between Wednesday, October 5, and Thursday, October 6, which resulted in the theft of ornaments from a grave.

The second incident happened between Sunday, October 9 and Sunday, October 16. As a result the grave’s fence was knocked down.

There has also been damage to name plaques, flower vases and figurines, which have been broken and scattered around the area.

Police Sergeant John Weir of Kirkcaldy Community Team said: “The level of vandalism to this cemetery is completely unacceptable.

“For the people who have seen their loved one’s graves desecrated, these incidents have caused them much anguish.

“We are appealing for anyone who was in the Hayfield Road area in the last fortnight and saw anything suspicious to contact us.

“However we can only tackle this vandalism with the support of the local community. Therefore we would call on anyone who does see any suspicious activity at Hayfield Cemetery in the coming days and weeks to report it to police immediately.”
