Video: Lorry in flames on busy Fife road

Motorists driving along Chapel Level in Kirkcaldy at lunchtime today (Wednesday) were shocked to see a lorry on fire near the entrance to the Fife Central Retail Park.

The lorry, belonging to Thomas Muir haulage and scrap metal dealers, burst into flames shortly after the roundabout on the B981 at the B&Q entrance to the retail park heading east along the dual carriageway.

Luckily the male driver managed to escape unhurt.

The fire service and police were quickly on the scene and the lorry, which was well alight, was extinguished by two appliances from Kirkcaldy fire station using two hose reel jets, one mains jet and two breathing aparatus sets.

The eastbound carriageway was closed for around half an hour while the vehicle and debris were moved from the road.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “The incident was reported to the police around 1.05pm.

“One occupant in the lorry got out safely and there were no injuries reported.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service added: “Two crews from our Kirkcaldy fire station attended and on arrival a heavy goods vehicle was well alight.

“The crews extinguished the blaze and continued to dampen down hot spots and clear debris from the road. The stop call came at 1.40pm.”
