Plans to consult over the future of a mothballed Fife school with no pupils have been put on hold.

The tiny Milton of Balgonie Primary won’t know its future until well into 2023.

Councillors have decided to delay a consultation on its future until a further review has taken place in June.

The school has the capacity to have 75 pupils, but its numbers fell from 45 in 2003 to just 18 in 2018, and in 2019 and 2020 it fell to zero.

It was mothballed in early 2021 in accordance with Scottish Government guidance, as the roll had fallen to nil, and remained there. The move was designed to allow it to reopen if circumstances changed.

Councillor Cara Hilton, education spokesperson, said: "There is potential for new housing in the local area and we've therefore decided to delay a consultation on the future of the school. This will give us a bit more time to assess any potential impact on the school roll."
