After being named as a runner-up in Scottish Swimming’s Club of the Year, Cupar and District Swimming Club members were invited to compete in Perth Pentaqua earlier this month.

And it proved to be a highly productive visit for the Cupar stars as they excelled in competition to win a total of 17 medals when swimming in the various disciplines against host club Perth City and other opposition from Club of the Year winners Aberdeen Dolphins, plus Arbroath St Thomas and Kinross Otters.

It was a large team of younger Cupar swimmers who took part in the event on Sunday, January 15, with several fantastic performances recounted by members and officials of the local club at the end of the day.

Cupar and District Swimming Club’s Abbie Waite competed in the youngest age group (10 years and under) and had a very successful day, coming first in the 50m breaststroke, second in both the 50m freestyle and 100m individual medley and third in the 50m butterfly.

In the same age group, Waite’s clubmate Ava Shaw came second in the backstroke and third in the 100m individual medley.

For the 11-12 year olds, Cupar ace Oscar Muir secured a medal for his third place in the 100m backstroke, whilst Brogan Smith came second in the 100m breaststroke and third in the 100m individual medley.

In the oldest age group (13-14 years), Cupar representative Anna Black took home medals for three third places in the 100m backstroke, butterfly and individual medley.

Clubmate Steven Laws had a very busy day, winning the 100m butterfly and freestyle events and securing further medals for coming second in the 100m backstroke, breaststroke and individual medley.

Laws’ excellent performance meant he also won the trophy for the overall 13-14 best boy.

When all the results were tallied up at the end of what was a successful staging of the event, it was the host club Perth City who came out on top to take the overall points trophy.

A Perth City spokesman posted on Facebook: “Putting on such a great event is only possible thanks to our volunteers and those from our visiting clubs who helped out too.

"If you played a part in the gala, give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done.”
