Fife woman with passion for baking turns hobby into a business

Alice Simpkins from Glenrothes decided to keep herself busy during lockdown earlier this year by improving her baking skills and it has proved to be such a success that her Facebook page now has hundreds of followers.

She is also now looking at developing it to eventually become a full-time business.

Alice, 26, who works as an office administrator at a joinery company in Glenrothes, said she has always had an interest in baking.

She said: “I have always enjoyed baking and have baked from a young age. Since moving out with my partner two years ago, I have much more space and freedom to bake in my own kitchen.

"I studied hospitality in secondary school and picked up a few tips and tricks from there which I still use to this day. I never created the Facebook page with the sole intention of making lots of money.

"I was happy for it to fund my hobby, using the money I make to help buy my ingredients and update my equipment to improve my baking. I was baking almost every second day during lockdown to keep myself busy and posting my creations on Instagram.

"I decided to create the page for my friends and family on Facebook so they could buy some tray bakes. Since then my page has grown and I now have over 400 followers which is amazing!”

Alice, who has made brownies, rocky road, cookies, fudge and most recently, cupcakes, started back at her job in July after being placed on furlough in March, but enjoys baking so much that she intends to keep it going: “I really love the feedback I get from those who buy my cakes so I didn't want to give up my page. I try to fit in as much baking as I can as I enjoy it so much.

"I would definitely love to do my baking full time in the future. I know it will take a lot of hard work and dedication but to turn my passion into a full time business would be fantastic.”

Alice’s Facebook page is called CAKE.by alice and she offers collection and delivery in her local area.
