Celebrating Fife women at events ahead of International Women’s Day

Celebrating women’s empowerment and achievements will be the order of the day at two events this weekend to mark International Women’s Day.

The first is being organised by Fife Migrants Forum and is happening tomorrow (Friday) at the International Centre in The Kirkcaldy Centre from 11am to 2pm.

It will feature two workshops - the first on motivation and the second on loving yourself.

There will also be a photographic exhibition showcasing women from various ethnic minorities in the community.

There will also be a speech by town councillor Judy Hamilton, followed by inspirational talks from volunteers and women who Fife Migrants Forum have supported. There will also be stalls on Reiki massage, beauty therapy, henna to ethnic clothing, scarves and candles.

Katarzyna Slawek, event co-ordinator, Fife Migrants Forum, said: “We would like to reflect on the progress and achievements of those women who made Fife their home and how they have contributed to their new community.

“This year’s topic is ‘We rise by lifting each other’.”

ONFife is holding an event on Saturday at Rothes Halls, Glenrothes from 10am.

The headline speaker is Ibtisam Al-Farah, an inspirational woman who has overcome many challenges – including being orphaned in Yemen as a small child – to begin a new life in a new country. She went on to establish an organisation working with refugees and asylum seekers.

Other speakers will include Ruth Cammies on the Open University and Jennie Lee; Queendom of Fife founder Cara Forrester in conversation with author and podcaster Lisa May Young; footballer Robyn McCafferty; a Q&A session with ONFife chief executive Heather Stuart, Diana Sykes, director of Fife Contemporary, and Pat Greenhaugh, of Equalities Fife.

Workshops will include: mindfulness, Walk ON, line-dancing, an Introduction to Gaelic and Book Sculpture. There will also be several stalls from groups such as Equalities Fife, SAJE and Macmillan Cancer Support. Tickets are £3 and can be bought on the day.
