Fife flat narrowly misses out on being crowned Scotland's Christmas Home of the Year 2025

A cosy Fife flat which is transformed into a winter wonderland every Christmas has narrowly missed out on being named Scotland’s Christmas Home of the Year 2025.

Sugar Plum Loft in Burntisland was one of five properties in Scotland vying for the coveted title on a special one-off festive episode of the popular BBC programme.

With properties in Edinburgh, Peterhead, Cumnock and Millport all featuring, the judges Anna Campbell-Jones, Danny Campbell and Banjo Beale travelled the length and breadth of the country to visit the homes.

Sugar Plum Loft is a two-bedroom flat in Burntisland that was converted from the former RBS building on the town’s High Street.

This is the fifth Christmas in the flat for homeowner Emily Watson, who moved in in August 2021. And in the years since, she has built up a collection of Christmas decorations which come out as soon as Halloween is over – if not before.

“I always start decorating for Christmas in November but actually this year I started wee bits in October. The tree has been up since the day after Halloween so it has been Christmas in my flat for quite a while now so it’s nice to see everyone else decorating and catching up,” she said.

“It’s quite nice because when I get to December, I know all the decorating is done and I can just enjoy it.”

The Christmas decs aren’t just confined to one area of the three bedroom flat, with Emily having let slip that she has a total of five Christmas trees in her home this year. And because of that, the 29-year-old said she found it difficult to pick a favourite decoration or room.

“The living room tree is one of my favourite parts as that’s where I put the most colour and I go quite fun with coloured lights and different decorations and disco balls,” she said.

“But I really enjoyed decorating my bedroom this year and I’ve got a wreath above the bed and things. I went quite all out in my bedroom.”

A huge lover of Christmas, Emily said she has found inspiration for her festive decorations in many different places.

“My mum and dad have always gone all out at Christmas time and my grandparents are the same - my papa creates a whole front door scene outside every year.

“So I’ve come from quite an arty and creative family and I get a lot of inspiration from them. I also go on Pinterest and look through posh home magazines and things to find things I want to recreate.”

While all five properties received praise from the judges on the programme which aired on Monday night, two stood out above the rest.

Burntisland’s Sugar Plum Loft and Cumnock’s Holly Jolly Mouse House both scored the maximum 30 points, with all three judges awarding both homes 10/10.

The tie led to a debate between the judges over which should be crowned Scotland’s Christmas Home of the Year 2025

And in the end, it was the Holly Jolly Mouse House that narrowly took the title.

Anna Campbell-Jones said: “I think it’s really difficult because each home embodies things that I absolutely love to see in a Christmas home. With the Holly Jolly Mouse House you’ve got this sense of traditions built in layers and layers over time.

“But with the Sugar Plum Loft you’ve got somebody who’s putting their own creativity and their own personality into making things and there’s something so personal about that that it just lights up my heart.”

After appearing on Scotland’s Christmas Home of the Year, Emily said she felt motivated to do even more Christmas decorating in her flat for 2026.

She added: “This has totally given me so much motivation going on the show and I’m already thinking about next year’s decorations. I’ve always been interested in interiors and this has given me a boost to really DIY some things and push myself.”
