Young carers are children and young people who in some way look after or support someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, or are affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse.

FYC young carers range from eight to 25 years old and are allocated a worker who meets with them to discuss the types of support they require.

Katie Macfarline, befriending coordinator, said: “FYC is dedicated to raising awareness of young carers support needs, as well as providing opportunity for them to have a break from their caring role and to build confidence.

"This could be a walk along the beach, a visit to a local site or café, or a variety of fun activities. We also provide person centred support through group and one-to-one meetings, young carer statements, and support young adult carers to move in to adulthood.

"Volunteer befrienders must be over the age of 18 and will enhance what we offer by helping our young people access social activities in their communities, build trusting relationships, and have fun along the way.

"Recent events in the world have been difficult for us all to live through, and our young carers are no different.
