Golf tournament in memory of Gillian Parsons’ landmark event for Maggie’s Fife
One of the longest established fundraising events for our Maggie’s Centre has celebrated a landmark anniversary by raising thousands more £s.
The Gillian Parsons Memorial Golf Day returned for its 20th edition in August, and tookg place at Dunnikier Park Golf Club, Kirkcaldy, in glorious sunshine.
It raised £9921, taking its total to £160,000 with every penny going to the centre based in the grounds of the Victoria Hospital.
The popular charity day, held in memory of Gillian Parsons - the sister of event founder and co-organiser Shona Hutchison - has been raising money for Maggie’s Fife since its inception in 2006.

The day saw 100 golfers tee off in teams of four, with various competitions and challenges along the way, including nearest to pin, beat the pro, and prizes for the top three placed teams.
Once the action on the course was concluded, the attention turned to the events in the club house, where guests enjoyed a two-course meal, followed by a raffle, live auction, and prize presentation.
The winners came from Fife Golf Trust and included Chris Millar, James Leslie, Bryan Gibson and Grant Peden.
But the biggest winner was our Maggie’s Centre which benefited from all the proceeds raised though ticket sales, sponsorship, and fundraising which will help it support people living with a cancer diagnosis, and those who love them.
Shona said: “Gillian would have been so chuffed with raising over £160,000. The golf day was her and Ian Howarth’s idea. Unfortunately she didn’t get to see even the first one. Ian still attends and helps every year, and he also organises a golf day for the Maggies Centre Larbert each year.”
Co-organiser Dave Foster added: “Twenty years of fundraising and over £160,000 raised, and all via a great day on the golf course. Heartfelt thanks to the many supporters of the Gillian Parsons Memorial Golf Day - here is to our 21st.”
The bumper donation was also welcomed by the cancer care centre.
Natalie Fairfoul from Maggie’s said: “We are especially grateful to Dave and Shona for the all the hard work that they put into organising this event year after year, and for their ongoing commitment to supporting Maggie’s. It was a wonderful day, and we are delighted that it has raised another fantastic amount this year. It’s a truly special event that we all look forward to.”
