As the pandemic continues to impact people’s lives, that generosity has enabled Samaritans to continue to be there 24/7 for anyone struggling to cope.

June Race, director of Kirkcaldy Samaritans, said: “We are run entirely by unpaid volunteers.

"We rely on fundraising, donations and grants to help keep the lights on and the phone lines open. Given the confidential service we provide, it’s not possible for volunteers to provide this service from home.

“Due to lockdown restrictions, we have had to cancel all outreach events and fundraising opportunities.

"We have also had to invest in protective screening, and cover the ongoing costs of anti-viral cleaning materials and hand sanitisers. ”

Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide and the service is there for anyone in emotional distress – but that aim comes with a financial cost attached.

For example, £5 is needed to fund the cost of one call and £200 to train a new volunteer.

June added: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of supporters and individuals during these unprecedented and difficult times, so we want to take this opportunity to publicly thank everyone .

"Without your generosity, we would not be able to the work we do.”
