Marcus Rashford inspires Kirkcaldy estate to dig deep for Christmas appeals

The drive was organised by thoughtful mum of two Dawn Cummings after she was inspired by footballer Marcus Rashford’s efforts to help feed children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The donations will be split between Kirkcaldy Foodbank and the Cottage Family Centre to help some of the town’s most vulnerable people over the festive period.

Dawn, who is a people manager at McDonald’s said: “I had been following Marcus Rashford’s campaign for free school meals and I had also seen a wee boy on Twitter collecting for his community and thought that it was a good idea.

"There had recently been some negative comments on the Dunnikier community Facebook page about certain things.

"I thought what can we do that would be positive, so I asked people on the page if they would support me with a collection for charity.

"The response was overwhelming! Donations of food, toys and money have been pouring in from people from the estate – one little boy even donated about 20 of his toys!”She added: "It has been a rubbish year for everyone, and hopefully with this collection we can help some local families through tough times.

"It is all about community, and the estate has really come together to help out people who are less fortunate than themselves. I started the ball rolling with my Facebook post and now everyone is helping me along.”

Greens of Dunnikier, which opened three weeks ago in the estate, has also been helping with donations of perishable food and providing a space in store to collect donations.

Kelly Cassidy-Rushford, retail store manager at Greens said: “We are extremely happy to get involved with the collection drive that the community is doing for charities in Kirkcaldy.

"We have boxes in store for people to drop donations off and we will be personally donating a range of perishable food towards the drive. Greens is a family orientated business and we are glad to be helping families during these hard times.”
