It will shut its branch in Kirkcaldy’s High Street nearly next year when the lease on the building expires.

The company says it is “unable to continue to trade viably from this location” and the doors will close for the last time next February.

Staff will be deployed to other stores.

WHSmith has been on the town’s High Street since the late 1990s after it took over rivals, John Menzies.

It used to have record and book departments on the upper floor along with stationery, but, more recently, has operated only from its ground floor.

A spokesman for WHSmith said: “We can confirm that the store in Kirkcaldy will close in February 2021 when our lease expires.

“Unfortunately, we are unable to continue to trade viably from this location and the decision has been taken to close the store as a result of the forthcoming lease expiry.”

The spokesman added: “As one of the largest supporters of the UK High Street, we are disappointed to be losing our presence in Kirkcaldy and we would like to thank all our customers for their support and for shopping with us.

The company said it was “grateful for the commitment of store colleagues” and said it would support them “with this transition and redeploy to nearby stores, where possible.”

Other big names to have departed the High Street in recent years include Tesco, BhS, and M&S.
