Upgrade plans unveiled for Wetherspoon’s pub in Fife town
A long-established Wetherspoons pub in Fife is set for an upgrade, if councillors approved new plans.
The Golden Acorn in Glenrothes is the subject of a planning application to Fife Council for the Installation of replacement windows, doors, cladding and panelling, and a re-painting of render to front of building in North Street.
The application has been submitted parent company JD Wetherspoon, and will be considered by councillors in due course.
The building was originally a hotel which opened in 1964 during the first phase of the town centre’s development. By 1983, the property was refurbished and renamed the Albany before it became a JD Wetherspoon venue in 2003.

The company wants to upgrade the front of the building.
In a supporting statement, submitted as part of the application, it said: “The concept for the proposed works at the property are driven by simplicity and practicality of materials. The proposed replacement of shopfront elements to the building are to be aluminium systems which are better suited for the purpose and will be more durable than the existing timber elements which are failing due to weathering and age.
“The proposal seeks to augment the visual quality of the building’s exterior through removing the problematic timber bi-folding doors and surrounding shopfront which have become rotten and damaged in places.
“The work is intended to further the use of the building , permitting the venue to serve both locals and visitors.”
