Councillors back campaign to change train station name which confuses visitors

Councillors across Fife have thrown their weight behind a campaign to rename a train station.

A meeting of the full Fife Council agreed to support a motion from Councillor Daniel Wilson (Glenrothes Central and Thornton. SNP) for ‘Glenrothes With Thornton’ to simply be known as Thornton - after the town it is based in.

The station was opened in 1992 and, over the years, its name has caused confusion with some visitors who get off the train expecting to be in Glenrothes which is a three-mile, 20-minute bus ride away.

Thornton Community Council has been leading the campaign for the change, and now its bid has the backing of Fife Council.

Councillor Wilson said: “All three ward councillor support the move along with the town’s MSP and MP and area committee, and, most importantly, 1048 people have signed a petition backing the move. We want to see the station renamed.”

His proposal was backed by Councillor Lynda Holton (Glenrothes Central and Thornton, SNP) who said: “We all know Glenrothes is more than a stone’s throw away. You face a 20-minute bus ride, ten minute taxi ride, or a 25-minute cycle - or over an hour’s walk into centre of town.

“The name causes confusion with visitors from afar and also detracts from Thornton as a destination which has a rich heritage, good walking routes, independent shops and good eateries. It has a close knit community and active community council, and a historic village quite distinct from Glenrothes.

“This report is the final piece of the puzzle to get this over the line.”
