On the Fringe in Dundee...

Fife Fest at Silverburn is done, Outwith Festival Dunfermline is done but there is still time to catch Dundee Fringe until the weekend.

This being their sixth year, they bring over 100 shows this time around making it another reason to head north for some culture and music.

Last year they took over units in the Keller shopping mall and looked doomed as the centre closed for good. However, artistic director JD Henshaw was undeterred and acquired six new spaces across two venues close to each other; the first being Sweet@The Steps Theatre housed in Dundee Central Library and the second being the Little Theatre just across the road.

With affordable ticket prices ranging from £5 - £10 this admirable approach is to be applauded following Edinburgh charging up to £20 for some shows less than an hour in length.

Many shows have transferred from EdFringe too, like magician Dan Bastinelli and One Man Poe from Threedumb Theatre finding new appreciative audiences.

Still to come is two-time winner of Scots Singer Of The Year, Iona Fyfe, who follows her success in Edinburgh with her ‘Scots Song’ show (Sept 19, 5pm) and the Old Pier Prophets bring stories and song to the stage in ‘Songs Of Newport’ (Sept 18, 8.15pm), with a free raffle on the night.

Poet EKSstance introduces sea ballads and tales in ‘Siren Song’ at 4.45pm (Sept 19-20), and Tony Riley searches for answers in the music of the late Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd in ‘Crazy Diamond’ at 7pm on September 16-17.

Scots language performers are coming together for a showcase of music, song, poetry and spoken word curated by Elfie Picket Theatre and the festival organisers Sweet Productions at the Little Theatre on Saturday at 6pm with an open mic part of the show complimenting the impressive programme.
